The main reason for attending school is to find interests in a subject that later helps students choose the best careers. It is interesting how American schools provide various subjects in deeper aspects and help student independently seek for their personal interests. For example, such experiments in science class leads students to research further about certain subjects and provide motivations on setting their goals.
Providing chances to realize where each individual finds their talent is the most important task that high schools must accomplish. However, at the school I attended in South Korea, many curriculums were taught based on mostly learning theories. I did not have opportunities to see through my bare eyes to learn how and why the theory worked by experiments. Numerous memorization without deeper logic made me learn inefficiently. Besides, my school only had 1 science hour per week in which I was not able to learn as much as I wanted about the subject. Numerous choices of classes at Okemos High School excited me because I knew those experiences would help me find what I am mostly interested in and be talented at. For example, I did not have opportunities to learn about computer science in my elementary or middle school years. However, in America, I was able to take computer science even though I did not have any background knowledge about the subject. As a result, the more and more I learned about computer science, I gained confidence in this field that I started to look up deeper concepts and begin making my own programs.
